Position Title: Mentor

Hours per Week: 27+ hours

Position description: As an AmeriCorps member with CalSERVES, you will serve as a mentor for elementary school children in our reading tutoring, after school, and evening family literacy programs. Mentors serve part-time at one of seven school sites, supporting the academic and social development of their students. Along with the other members of your team, and supported by a Supervising Teacher and Team Leaders, you will have the opportunity to tutor students one-on-one on a daily basis, guiding them through carefully designed lessons to increase their reading, writing and comprehension skills. You may also work with a partner to lead a group of children through the after school or evening family literacy programs, providing whole and small group instruction in reading, math, homework, and enrichment activities. All mentors will also participate in National Days of Service and other special events throughout the school year, in addition to ongoing trainings and workshops.

Requirements: Must commit to serve a minimum of 900 hours through June 25, 2010. Applicant must be 17 years of age or older.
